Words of Light and Hope

Jane McLarty

At this time of year with the clocks just having gone back we are all the more conscious of the limited hours of light we have, and of dusk falling earlier and earlier. It’s a time of year when we are surrounded by reminders of darkness – the ghosties and ghoulies of Hallowe’en – but the very same festival points forward to All Hallows, or All Saints Day. This is a reminder for us that as John’s Gospel says, ‘The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not overcome it.’ In these days we remember those we love that we see no longer, but who are still part of us. They live in our hearts, and they along with us are part of the communion of saints – we are one with all who love God, past, present and future.

All Saints by Janet Morley

For all the saints

who went before us,

who have spoken to our hearts

and touched us with your fire,

we praise you, O God.

For all the saints

who live beside us,

whose weaknesses and strengths

are woven with our own,

we praise you, O God.

For all the saints,

who live beyond us,

who challenge us,

to change the world with them,

we praise you, O God.
